I recognize the land upon which I live and work is the ancestral and current homeland of the Nooksack and Lummi people, who cultivate deep interconnected relationships with all beings—living and non-living. I recognize indigenous wisdom keepers and tradition holders live on this land today, and vibrant cultures are still alive.

I recognize oppression and racism are real and fundamental in our current systems. I recognize oppression and racism are based in fear, hatred, and in a story of ‘power-over.’ I recognize violence was and is perpetuated against Native Americans, Black Americans, Asian Americans, and many people from many cultures, ethnicities, sexualities, and genders. I recognize as a white cis-gendered middle-class college educated woman of settler/emigrant heritage I have—and will continue to have—privilege, blind spots, and power because of this system.

I recognize the fundamental injustice in this.

I recognize this system was created and is perpetuated to keep us separate and afraid which, if unquestioned and unchanged, will destroy us. And, too, I recognize the unfathomable creative potential in the human family. I recognize we have what it takes to heal and foster vitality for all living and non-living beings. I work and live with humility, hope, a willingness to be wrong, and to do what it takes to live in mutuality.

I believe in the power of kinship and love. I write to help craft a narrative of possibility and healing.
